Characters

It’s been quite a while since I last posted something and I hate myself for it. I hope I can have a relevant post regularly.

In my online absence, I was revising my novel for I think the 3rd time… I came across a post about knowing your characters better. There are questions. I answered them all except for two:

~ Tell us your biggest secret. (Not really a question, though)
~ Your worst fear?

Being in character, I realized I don’t really know my protagonist’s biggest secret because her biggest secret is something she didn’t know until recently. I probably need to give her a big secret that only she knows.

Her worst fear just recently happened so I don’t know if it will still be considered as such…

I don’t really know… I’m confused…

I am not LAZY! I am Writing!

My sister thought I was doing nothing but to sit in front of my computer and stare at it. I suddenly told her, “I am writing, leave me alone!”

Then she asked, “Is it hard to write? I want to be a writer to. Where do you get your ideas?”

I sighed. How could I ever explain to her that writing is never easy. Lazy people never become writers because they’ll never finish anything. So I said, “Yes, it’s hard. You have to be alone most of the time, daydream or dream at night. Your ideas will just hit your mind. You have to read a lot. You have to read everything you can grasp. You have to understand quirky words. You have to be friends with dictionary and thesaurus. You have to love books, stories, literature, maps, atlas, travel books and any other references you can find helpful. You need to imagine the world or your own world, learn enough to convey it to writing. You need to know a lot of people–your characters. You have to be patient in revising, editing, rewriting, reading and reading all over again!”

She stared at me, gaping, and returned to my book she was reading.

Well… I think sometimes I’m pretty useless at home because I rarely talk to them. I’m always at my room, in front of this computer, letting my thoughts wander around so I could write a story I want to read. 😉

How Writing Became My World

I love reading but only since High School. And it’s because of Harry Potter books. Since then, I started to read widely, from genre to genre and I began collecting books. Only by 2002 I started writing. Poems were my first outlet until after I got bored of it, I decided to try novels. How far fetched it was for me and ambitious too, thinking it was easy.

Damn, it was not. My first attempt was with my best friend. It was a failure. There was nothing out of ordinary in it. It remained unfinished until now.

Then there was this guy, a good friend of mine too, who asked me to help him. He wanted to write a novel inspired by his own love story. But the setting is medieval. He asked me to write the love story while he will take care of the action. It was fun, really, until a minor character in that story sparked my mind.

Then I started writing, creating my own fantasy world. It started as a short story but became a full blown novel. From 2004 to 2006, I wrote it, edited and edited it. Then it inspired 3 more novels. I ‘m revising the second novel now. And so here I am, talking about it.

With this guy I helped, I don’t know if he finished the book because we went to college and never heard of him. But thanks to his ideas, writing became my world.

And now, I’m thinking of posting my unpublished novels here, chapter by chapter.  I would rather hear a feedback than to have it on my bookshelves, only read by few colleagues and friends.
